After many years of talking, I finally rode my bicycle to work this morning. After all, it is KC Bike Week you know. So, at least for one day, I went from 70 mpg on the scooter to none at all. Oh yeah, reduced that carbon footprint way down there. I took off from the house (late as usual) around 6:45 this morning. I haven’t exactly been training very hard for this little experiment, so luckily Family Bicycles was hosting a rest break at Gregory & Wornall. Had a nice little snack break and chatted a bit, gave me a chance to catch my breath. Nice Lady: “So, do you bike to work much?” Fat Phil: “No, first time.” Nice Lady: “How far have you been this morning?” Fat Phil: “Oh ’bout 1/2 a block, my house is the green one right over there.” I’ll have to be sure and stop by this afternoon again on the way home, I think she’ll be pleased (or surprised) that I’m still kicking. The ride went remarkably well actually, especially considering my total lack of planning. I wasn’t entirely sure what route to take. But, seriously, how lost can you really get between Brookside & Downtown? I took Brookside down to the Plaza, then went east a few blocks and kind of meandered up side streets the rest of the way. This “plan” ended up taking me through a few, shall we say, less than desirable stretches, but whatever. No worries. I think with a few tweaks I’ll have a good, low-stress route worked out.
Our bike to work day isn’t for another month, but I’m ready for it. Maybe I’ll get some new tires for the ride, though a road bike is still on my wish list.
Yeah I’m definitely diggin’ the road bike, makes a huge difference. Unfortunately this might be my one trip during the official “bike to work” time frame; Calling for thunderstorms the rest of the week.
Came home straight up Main, worked just fine. I pedal faster with a city bus a few feet behind me.
How many miles? I’ll verify on mapmyride.com so don’t lie to me. I need to see if you are pulling ahead of me in the mileage race…
About 18. Nice lil’ ride actually!
