One holiday down, one to go. I do kinda like turkey-day though. But then, I like just about everything associated with the sport of gluttony. I’ll try my best to recap the long weekend. I’m in something of a funk though, so don’t expect much. The specter of the next holiday, with all its parties and shopping and driving everywhere, is hanging over my head like a black raincloud. Humbug.
We celebrated Thanksgiving out at Mom’s this year. Awesome meal; Roasted turkey, stuffing, noodles, ‘taters, corn, pie… You know the drill. I DO like Thanksgiving food. Little “carb heavy” perhaps, but who’s counting. I made the slight error of taking Gabe out there with me, on the premise that nobody likes to be alone on the holidays. I thought I could stick him out in Mom’s big fenced-in garden and just give him a few toys to keep him occupied. That lasted all of about 20 seconds. Little bugger can climb chainlink fences like a monkey. He ended up tied to a rope on the back porch and he did OK there… As long as I went out and played a little fetch with him every 30 minutes or so. He was diggin’ the fetch game on the 3 acre yard. After the feast, we headed down to Todd’s apartment for the annual Plaza lighting ceremony. This is the first year in his new location; Big upgrade from the last place. We had a perfect view from his windows, no need to go down and mix it up with the mob. He didn’t have any lunchables out this year though… What’s up with that?
Friday was a bit of a disappointment. I am a big fan of the “Black Friday” sales, see. As long as I can remember I’ve been out there in the wee hours, standing in line with a bunch of dorks so I could save $4 on some odd item that I don’t really need. Then we all circle up at work and compare “bargains”. Something of a ritual. I just couldn’t get motivated this year though. First, CompUSA messed me up by changing their opening to midnight, instead of 6:00 like it usually is. That earned them a boycott. My second choice was Microcenter, but they didn’t put their ad out on Thursday like they were supposed to. So, I just said screw the whole thing. I dragged in to Microcenter around 8:30 just to say I went, but it wasn’t the same. You gotta be there at 4:00 in the morning, or it just isn’t Black Friday. All the same, I picked up a pretty good load of junk. I got a new pc case, power supply, wireless antenna, a few keyboard/mouse sets, 100 blank dvd’s, a backpack, and some other crap I’ve already forgotten about. It’s a rather odd assortment considering all I wanted was a hard drive. But, there weren’t any good deals on drives and I didn’t want to leave empty-handed. The downside of my laziness was showing up at work for show-and-tell. Everybody else had 19″ LCD’s, Tivo’s, laptops, and I’ve got friggin’ blank DVD’s. Embarrassing.
Saturday was spent kind of winding down. Aside from taking Gabe on an exceptionally long walk, I didn’t accomplish much. I went and hung out at Todd’s for my evening entertainment. In true bachelor fashion, he provided cigars and a bowl of dry cereal to snack on. Oh, and grapes. The cereal and grapes didn’t fill me up though, so Doni took me to Hoopers for a burger later.
Sunday isn’t even worth mentioning. The storm shut us down. I did buy a new cordless drill, and tried to put a few holes in the brick wall of the TV room. Didn’t go too well, much like every other thing I’ve ever tried to do around the house. I got one finished, but could only get about 1/4″ into the second one. Either I ran into an exceptionally hard brick, or the $5 drill bit they sold me was only good for one shot. Sheesh.
